Red Ventures 2007 to 2010<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brian-mcdowell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/red-ventures-brian-mcdowell1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75 aligncenter\" title=\"Red Ventures SEO\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brian-mcdowell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/red-ventures-brian-mcdowell1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Red Ventures SEO\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.brian-mcdowell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/red-ventures-brian-mcdowell1-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.brian-mcdowell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/red-ventures-brian-mcdowell1.jpg 667w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Brian McDowell was the first resource for Red Ventures in their Charlotte NC headquarters.\u00a0 He took SEO from a proof of concept to one of the most successful and profitable marketing channels in the company.\u00a0 Brian was single handedly responsible for a multi-million dollar revenue channel with over a 300% gain in year one.\u00a0 After 5 quarters of aggressive growth, Red Ventures invested in more resources for Brian&#8217;s team including Jr level SEO&#8217;s, developers and multiple interns.\u00a0 By the end of year two, Brian increased revenue by another +50% with numbers in the milti-million dollar range yet again.\u00a0 He was able to close out year two with multiple self designed in-house SEO\/SEM tools.\u00a0 These tools were a combination of tracking, monitoring, scraping and data transformations that were unavailable anywhere else in the industry.\u00a0 Under Brian&#8217;s direction, the team was able to test multiple linking strategies on stand alone sites and track their effectiveness in Google, Yahoo and MSN.\u00a0 There was no such thing as a budget as long as they were learning the landscape.\u00a0 Any and all kinds of tactics were used from aggressive to non-aggressive. \u00a0 Similar tactics were even broken up between individual brokers, vendors and service providers.\u00a0 Red Ventures has a unique business model in the fact that they provide customers to their parent companies, not just leads.\u00a0 Red Ventures has their own call center, runs their own sites and assumes all of the marketing risks\/costs.\u00a0 From an SEO perspective the sites were managed similarly to a super affiliate. \u00a0They would dominate the long tail but never rank #1 for the brand.\u00a0 While at Red Ventures, Brian McDowell also cracked the processes to get national sites to rank in the top positions for all local level geo targeted search queries.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brian was the first employee at Red Ventures dedicated to Search Engine Optimization<\/li>\n<li>Proved SEO at Red Ventures and took it from a proof of concept to a dynamic multi person multi talented team<\/li>\n<li>Developed the SEO strategies, standards, best practices and reporting metrics<\/li>\n<li>Over his two and a half years he was responsible for well over $10,000,000 in revenue across (multiple brands and sites)<\/li>\n<li>Trained and directed multiple Jr level SEOs as well as dedicated search marketing developers and interns<\/li>\n<li>Built the checklist for all new sites and played a critical role in new site development and design<\/li>\n<li>Constructed an in depth auditing system of our sites to identify potential issues quickly with the proper data driven responce<\/li>\n<li>Educated the rest of Red Ventures on the power of SEO and established ownership of the new site implementation process<\/li>\n<li>Tested multiple linking strategies (aggressive and non-aggressive) on independent sites while tracking and documenting their effectiveness on the top search engines<\/li>\n<li>Designed the in house SEO tools that are unavailable by any other 3rd party provider<\/li>\n<li>Put a heavy focus on tracking linking strategies, automation, competitive intelligence and site integrity<\/li>\n<li>Established strict terms and conditions for our affiliates in order to protect our brands in natural search<\/li>\n<li>Developed a system for securing and maintaining top rankings for national and local level geo specific search terms across multiple brands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 1.5em;\">Brian McDowell &#8211; LendingTree.com \/ RealEstate.com 2005 to 2007<\/h2>\n<p>This was a critical point in the career of Brian McDowell. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/LendingTree.com\">LendingTree.com<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/RealEstate.com\">RealEstate.com<\/a> at the time were rolled up under the IAC\u00a0umbrella\u00a0and were coming off multiple quarters of amazing gains. \u00a0The main goal was getting into a development roll for the RealEstate.com family of sites. \u00a0Since Brian did not know the proper technologies, he started in a QA roll (Software Test Engineer). \u00a0The primary responsibility was to break every application prior to going to the production environment. \u00a0There was an addiction and love for hacking the logic as well as the design. \u00a0McDowell was responsible for many high profile projects and gained a deep understanding for website architecture and release cycles. \u00a0After more then a year in QA, he landed a development roll building a universal data\u00a0aggregator that was\u00a0capable\u00a0of pulling hundreds of real estate MLS data feeds and transform them into our in house data structure. \u00a0Not to long after that Brian was offered an amazing opportunity to work with Rob Lenderman and Paul Kennard in the SEO group. \u00a0The days were spent doing data analysis and building solutions for dominating for lending and real estate key phrases on the local and national level (some of the most competitive in the industry).<\/p>\n<p>Key focus areas included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Managed the search engine optimization development and design for \u00a0RealEstate.com, LendingTree.com and other IAC properties<\/li>\n<li>Established our brands as top competitors for both local and global real estate \/ financial terms<\/li>\n<li>Designed and built an extensive SEO database to keep an archive of ranking, traffic, links and other strategic initiatives<\/li>\n<li>Built multiple in house SEO tools using .NET and SSIS<\/li>\n<li>Technical manager for LendingTree and RealEstate.com&#8217;s CMS system<\/li>\n<li>Co-Developed an SSIS ETL package to acquire, extract, parse and load data from an MLS provider<\/li>\n<li>Developed custom SQL Server Integration Services transformation components using C#<\/li>\n<li>Supported development initiatives using ASP and ASP.net<\/li>\n<li>Developed and executed test cases in a fast paced environment<\/li>\n<li>Identifying back-end and front-end code issues for multiple large scale web applications<\/li>\n<li>Executed weekly environmental diagnostic stress tests and monthly regression tests for all business units<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 1.5em;\">Brian McDowell &#8211; Cunnane Goup LLC 2002 to 2004<\/h2>\n<p>Brian rebuilt 2 different versions of\u00a0<a title=\"Cunnane Group\" href=\"http:\/\/cunnanegroup.com\/\">CunnaneGroup.com<\/a> between 2002 and 2004. \u00a0This is where he had his first real introduction to SEO and internet marketing. \u00a0During the same period he was still working through some contract work with Electronic Management Services and multiple Graphic Design \/ Web Design contracts. \u00a0He helped transition the archaic paper trail project management system that the Cunnane Group was using over to an online management system called\u00a0<a title=\"BuildTopia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buildtopia.com\/\">BuildTopia<\/a>. \u00a0IT still played a critical roll in his future aspirations. \u00a0Brian obtained his real estate license and helped with over 15 million dollars in new home construction sales. \u00a0Unfortunately, the Cunnane Group had very little to offer in the lines of IT, marketing and online media. \u00a0He decided to continue his contracting career and began looking at local real estate companies that focused on their online media\u00a0presence (with a decent IT group).<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 1.5em;\">Brian McDowell &#8211; UNC Charlotte 2000 to 2002<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>Brian continued to work for Electronic Management Services while taking courses at\u00a0<a title=\"UNCC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uncc.edu\/\">UNCC<\/a>. \u00a0He made an aggressive attempt to finish his\u00a0Bachelors in Computer Science in just 2 years. \u00a0Unfortunately, only about 1\/2 of the credits from ECC transfered over to UNCC. \u00a0Brian was committed to his studies and took the maximum course load though each semester including summer sessions. \u00a0Similar minds gravitate toward each other and he quickly found himself fighting in mixed martial arts while competing for top GPA rankings in his class. \u00a0Staying calm under pressure (or high\u00a0adrenalin) while executing both\u00a0mathematically and strategically is one of his strongest traits.\u00a0\u00a0Brian graduated Cum Laude in Spring of 2002 with a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science from UNCC.<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 1.5em;\">Brian McDowell &#8211; Electronic Management Services &#8211; 1997 to 2005<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>A career path took no time in Buffalo NY. \u00a0Brian took a job 3 miles from his home (15 miles each way by bike) within a week of graduating. \u00a0For 2.5 years Brian built healthcare management software in Business Basic Extension (BBx) for the Diamond 725 platform. \u00a0In Q3 1999 Brian\u00a0licensed Electronic Management Services (EMS) in Charlotte, NC. \u00a0He telecommuted from a home office full time until mid 2000 when he decided to return to school and get a Bachelors degree and get more exposure to updated technologies. \u00a0From 2000 through 2005, Brian continued to put many hours a week into the company working as an\u00a0independent\u00a0contractor. \u00a0It was with EMS that Brian had his first introduction to HTML, Java and the power of internet marketing. \u00a0He built the first iteration of MaternaManager.com as well as an HTML \/ Java marketing piece that was handed out at trade conferences on 3.5&#8243; Erie Community College 1995 to 1997<\/h2>\n<p>After a failed attempt of making it on his own without an education, Brian decides to enroll at\u00a0<a title=\"Erie Community College\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Erie Community College<\/a>and\u00a0pursue\u00a0training in either Accounting or Computer Information Systems. \u00a0Brian worked his way through his Associates degree while working 70 hours a week between two jobs. \u00a0He aced the accounting\u00a0courses\u00a0but there was something about COBOL, RPG2 and SQL on the AS400 that got him all excited (he aced those as well). \u00a0In December of 1997, Brian graduated with an AAS in Computer Information Systems with High honors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brian McDowell on Twitter | LinkedIn Brian McDowell spends most of his time ripping apart web sites and looking under their covers. \u00a0Search engine optimization is more then his career, it is his life. \u00a0This page is an ongoing timeline &hellip;
